Thermochromatic Pigment and Stuff

In second grade we use a lot of second grade vocabulary. Sometimes though, we stretch our thinking and tackle a really hard unknown word, like today.
In our reading journals we wrote the word thermochromatic, then tried to figure out what in the world it could mean.
We finally figured out it meant something about heat and color.
We ventured onto the subject of matter.  A lot of us remembered some of the states of matter.  Our first experiment you will see when our science journals come home.
We made liquids into a solid with a chemical, causing a chemical reaction.
But, the fun had just begun.
We made another batch of GAK using a thermochromatic pigment. Then we got a Popsicle and got to figure out what heat had to do with the color. Pretty exciting.

Earlier in the week we discovered a hatched egg outside. One of us wanted to know what it was and brought a bird field guide from home.  Way to be a learner friend.  Not only was he learning, but he shared with Mrs. Jansen and the rest of us.

Math can be engaging.  Each group of two received a math manipulative.
Working with our partner, we created and solved a math problem.

Mrs. Paris loved watching us put our heads together to create math.

One student, who wasn't quite sure how to write 1/2 when measuring, created his own symbol  to express half of something using the variable "h" to stand for half.  Wow.

.
What a group of learners in second grade.
