A Fraction of Chocolate

I was gifted with some sweet little chocolate candy bars this week.  Kiddos have such a hard time with fractions in 4th and 5th that I was determined I would talk about them anytime I could.  So, we enjoyed an impromptu lesson on why we don't change like denominators when we add and subtract fractions.  Each bar was divided into twelve equal parts, just enough for a taste!

We've been reading, creating props and presenting articles from our Social Studies and Science Weeklies.  Honestly, the first time I pondered whether or not this was a good idea, but last week was much better and this week, we have kids ready for the six o'clock news. Love it!

We started early Friday by writing a note of welcome and encouragement to our new music minister.  She seemed very tickled by the whole class marching into church with a wee gift of writing and illustrating for her.
Our assistant presented an interesting science experiment  about chemical and physical changes, creating a butterfly image.

We really work hard all week and sometimes can't have the fun we'd like to with all the corona considerations. That makes Friday afternoons all the more enjoyable. Throw in a Popsicle and the cares of the week are washed down the creek.

I am so very thankful for this little slice of heaven.  I am ever amazed at all the things they create and find to do, from pottery to clubs, catch and release, and fashioning tools to clear the land.

As always a very full, busy week.  I can't even tell how amazing it is when all my kiddos are here.  Our focus in religion was types of prayers, two being praise and thanksgiving.  I am so thankful for the weather and a full house- Praise God from whom all blessings flow. We're ready for the weekend.

Space

After our big play dough making last Friday, we used it to create these models of our solar system.

We took music outside to do a little bucket drumming!

Changes In Latitude

We've been learning about latitude and longitude this week and getting more familiar with where we are in world.

We used an orange to draw the equator, the 45 N and 45S lines of latitude.  We then opened the orange and discovered nature made longitude lines.  Mrs. Jones asked us if this project was "appealing."  We thought it was in more ways than one.

We needed play dough for a space project next week, so we made yummy smelling, pretty colored play dough with Kool-aid.

It was a busy week. We did not get as much cooperation from the weather, so spent more time indoors and masked than usual. However today was perfect and the best day for being in the creek. So fun!

Hopefully, we'll all be able to be back in class next week!
